Our Objectives

CHIPS JU aims to advance semiconductor research by funding cutting-edge projects that explore new materials, architectures, and manufacturing techniques. By fostering collaboration between academia, research institutions, and industry players, the initiative seeks to drive breakthroughs that can lead to more efficient, powerful, and cost-effective semiconductor technologies. This focus on innovation not only supports the development of next-generation chips but also ensures that Europe remains at the forefront of technological advancements in the semiconductor sector.

A key objective of CHIPS JU is to expand and modernize semiconductor manufacturing facilities within Europe. This involves investing in state-of-the-art fabrication plants (fabs) and supporting the establishment of new production sites to meet the growing demand for semiconductors. By increasing local manufacturing capacities, the initiative aims to reduce dependency on external suppliers, mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities, and create high-skilled jobs within the European semiconductor industry.

CHIPS JU emphasizes the importance of collaboration between public entities and private companies to achieve its goals. By facilitating partnerships, the initiative ensures that resources are effectively pooled, expertise is shared, and synergies are maximized. These collaborations enable the alignment of research agendas, the pooling of financial resources, and the acceleration of project timelines, thereby enhancing the overall impact and sustainability of semiconductor advancements in Europe.

Ensuring a resilient and secure semiconductor supply chain is a crucial objective of CHIPS JU. The initiative focuses on identifying and mitigating potential risks within the supply chain, such as geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions, and resource scarcities. By diversifying supply sources, promoting strategic stockpiling, and enhancing logistical frameworks, CHIPS JU aims to safeguard the continuous availability of essential semiconductor components for European industries and critical infrastructure.

CHIPS JU is committed to advancing sustainable practices within the semiconductor industry. This includes promoting energy-efficient manufacturing processes, reducing the environmental footprint of semiconductor production, and encouraging the development of eco-friendly materials. By integrating sustainability into its objectives, the initiative not only addresses environmental concerns but also aligns with Europe's broader goals of achieving carbon neutrality and fostering a green economy.

Another vital objective of CHIPS JU is to cultivate a highly skilled workforce capable of driving innovation and supporting the growth of the semiconductor sector. The initiative invests in education and training programs, scholarships, and vocational training to equip individuals with the necessary technical and managerial skills. By addressing the skills gap and promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, CHIPS JU ensures a steady pipeline of talent to sustain the industry's long-term development.

CHIPS JU strives to enhance Europe's technological sovereignty by reducing reliance on non-European semiconductor technologies and suppliers. By developing indigenous capabilities and fostering homegrown innovations, the initiative seeks to ensure that Europe maintains control over critical technological infrastructures. This focus on sovereignty not only bolsters national security but also supports the EU's strategic autonomy in the global technology landscape.
