Chips JU

The Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) is a European public-private partnership, established by Council Regulation (EU) 2021/2085, as amended by (Council Regulation (EU) 2023/1782) to strengthen Europe’s semiconductor ecosystem and reinforce the Union’s technological sovereignty.

It manages funding opportunities across the entire electronic components and systems value chain and is the main implementation body of the Chips for Europe Initiative under the European Chips Act.

The Chips JU builds on previous partnerships, Electronic Components and Systems for European Leadership Joint Undertaking (ECSEL JU) and Key Digital Technologies Joint Undertaking (KDT JU), further strengthening Europe’s long-standing cooperation in electronic components and systems.

Our Mission

  1. Reinforcing Europe’s strategic autonomy in semiconductor technologies and reducing dependency on external suppliers.
  2. Accelerating innovation by funding cutting-edge research and fostering collaboration across industry, academia, and public authorities.
  3. Building and scaling world-class infrastructure - such as Pilot Lines, a Design Platform, and Competence Centres - to support the full semiconductor value chain.
  4. Driving the digital and green transitions by enabling energy-efficient, secure, and sustainable chip technologies for Europe’s future.

Why It Matters

In an increasingly interconnected and geopolitically complex world, electronic components and systems are critical to Europe’s economic resilience, technological security as well as green and digital transitions. By strengthening Europe's capacity to design, develop and deploy advanced semiconductor technologies, the Chips JU helps safeguard innovation, competitiveness and long-term strategic autonomy for the EU and its citizens.
