Chips JU Hosts First Meeting with Public Authorities Board and Permanent Representations

In the context of Europe’s growing ambition to secure a stronger position in the global semiconductor landscape, the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) hosted a meeting with counsellors and attachés from the Permanent Representations to the European Union of 21 countries. This first encounter opened a broader dialogue around the future Framework Programme (FP10) and the Chips Act 2.0, aiming to align shared priorities and national perspectives.

Moderated by Francis Deprez, Chair of the Chips JU Public Authorities Board (PAB), the meeting underscored the importance of reducing Europe’s dependencies in an increasingly competitive and uncertain global landscape. Participants stressed the need to evaluate the progress made so far and strengthen the continent’s industrial long-term resilience and technological leadership.

With the expected Chips Act 2.0 on the horizon, the meeting highlighted the need for ongoing information exchange on the developments of the EU Chips Act and the Chips JU activities. The discussion reaffirmed that the Chips JU tripartite structure has successfully aligned EU, national and industrial strategies, fostering collaboration between different entities. This model has been crucial in supporting the strategic objectives of the EU, ensuring that Europe remains at the forefront of innovation.

Participants also discussed the convergence of semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI), noting the critical role that advanced chips play in enabling AI-driven innovation. As Europe accelerates its AI strategy, developing cutting-edge semiconductor technologies is essential for maintaining the continent’s competitive edge and securing its global competitiveness.

Looking ahead, the meeting served as a reminder of the shared responsibility in building a more resilient and competitive European technology landscape. As the Chips JU continues to support the implementation of the EU Chips Act, participants reiterated the importance of working together, across national and European levels, to create a stronger, more autonomous semiconductor ecosystem fit for the digital future. The bridge building activity between the Permanent Representatives acting in the fields of Research, Industry, and Competitiveness, and PAB delegates of the Chips JU will continue, supporting the alignment and collaboration among all stakeholders involved in the semiconductor ecosystem.
