LMCC

Microchip Competence Centre of the Republic of Latvia

The Latvian Microchip Competence Centre (LMCC) in semiconductors (Chips) is a component of the European Commission’s Chip Act initiative. Established under the Digital Europe (DIGITAL-Chips-2024-SG-CCC-1) program, the LMCC has been developed in response to the recent geopolitical and technological challenges facing the European Union (EU). By harnessing the specialized expertise of its consortium members in fields such as microchip technologies, photonics, microelectronics, and quantum science, the LMCC seeks to position Latvia and the broader region at the cutting edge of microchip development and technological innovation. The importance of the LMCC is further underlined by the consortium’s alignment with their respective Research and Innovation Smart Specialization Strategies (S3), which focus on investments in research and innovation where the region holds clear competitive advantages. This project is fully integrated with Latvia’s national S3 strategy, reinforcing its implementation through cross-border collaboration and knowledge exchange. The LMCC project, through its planned activities, will support key objectives of the Digital Europe Programme: Enhancing Digital Capabilities: By investing in advanced technologies like quantum computing, AI, and cybersecurity, the project will improve Europe's digital infrastructure, with a focus on access for SMEs, startups, and research institutions. Supporting Digital Transformation: It will accelerate digital transformation by promoting interoperability and cross-border cooperation, with emphasis on the Baltic States and Nordics. Developing Digital Skills: The project will foster digital skills across the EU, particularly in the microchip sector, through specialized courses and lifelong learning programs. Promoting Digital Adoption: It will encourage the widespread use of digital solutions, supporting initiatives from Chips JU, and engaging with industry, government, and the public.
