TUning Risc-V to Automotive Needs & Different Other Themes
TURANDOT is a flagship European initiative under the Chips Joint Undertaking, aiming to establish strategic autonomy and leadership in automotive semiconductor technologies through the development of high-performance RISC-V processors. As the automotive industry moves rapidly towards software-defined, connected, and autonomous vehicles, Europe faces an urgent need to reduce dependence on non-European proprietary processor architectures. TURANDOT addresses this challenge by co-developing a modular and open hardware platform, specifically tailored for next-generation automotive applications.
The project unites a comprehensive European consortium of Integrated Device Manufacturers (IDMs), IP providers, SMEs, Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs), and automotive OEMs. Together, they will design, tape out, and validate multiple automotive-grade RISC-V systems-on-chip (SoCs), real-time processors, application class processors and accelerators, targeting performance levels up to PetaOPS. These processors will be fully aligned with emerging zonal and centralised vehicle compute architectures and will ensure compliance with critical industry standards.
The project will create a qualified IP repository, integrate dedicated AI and ML accelerators, and develop safety-critical software stacks. It will also provide benchmarking frameworks, industry-aligned quality assurance processes, and interoperable demonstrator platforms that showcase the maturity and competitiveness of the European RISC-V ecosystem. Over its duration, TURANDOT will deliver seven silicon demonstrators, demonstrate tangible progress and paving the way for industrial adoption. By the end of the project, TURANDOT will not only deliver high-performance silicon demonstrators and supporting toolchains but also establish a sustainable innovation ecosystem that brings together key stakeholders of the European value chain. The project will catalyze the adoption of RISC-V in automotive and adjacent domains.
