Malta Competence Centre
The Government of Malta is committed towards being an active contributor in the enhancement of Europe’s semiconductor industry. This has already been attested through Government’s support for the IPCEI project that ST Microelectronics were awarded to achieve SMART Factory and Industry 4.0 standards.
Through the Malta Competence Centre (MCC), the Government of Malta wants to continue to play an active role in the development of Europe semiconductor ecosystem. Through the application for MCC, the objective is to build on the strengths that Malta has developed in the semiconductor industry over the last years and to develop new niches. This process will also entail that the knowledge Malta has developed in the area of semiconductors is also disseminated via the European Network of competence centres.
The MCC will be focusing on specific niches within the semiconductor industry that build on the strengths and knowledge of the local ecosystem. Main technical areas of specialisation will be:
Fabless startup incubation,
Heterogenous integration and advanced packaging, and
Skills development in chip design
To reach the objectives of the MCC, a strong consortium of players led by Malta Enterprise (ME) – The Economic Development Agency of the Government of Malta, has been set up. Silicon Catalyst – a world leader in incubation and accelerator programmes for semiconductor start-ups, the University of Malta (UM) – Malta’s leading higher education institution, The Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) which is the leading vocational education and training institution in Malta together with the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) that is responsible for the Digital Innovation Hub will be the main players in the Consortium.
