SPIN CHIP

ULTRA-LOW POWER SUSTAINABLE SPIN CHIPS: THE MISSING BRICK FOR THE FUTURE OF EU MICRO-ELECTRONICS

Spintronics is an emerging field with the potential to drive future energy-efficient chip technologies. Unlike conventional electronics that use electric charges, spintronic devices leverage electron spins. This technology promises high performance and ultra-low power consumption, making it ideal for the growing of computing, particularly in AI. Spintronic devices can combine processing, logic, sensing and storage on a unified platform, advancing technologies such as neuromorphic electronics, quantum computing and energy harvesting, while contributing to low-carbon footprint goals. SPIN-CHIP aims to showcase the potential of magnetic tunnel junctions in the next generation of “made in EU” chips, significantly improving energy efficiency, sensitivity, speed, affordability, and cost-effectiveness. The project focuses on 4 key technical pillars: - Memory : Development of high-density, radiation-hardened magnetic random-access memory for space applications, using MTJs as non-volatile and efficient memory solutions - Computing : Creation of stochastic MTJs for innovative computing applications, including stochastic neural accelerators and probabilistic Ising machines, to enhance energy efficiency for edge AI tasks - Sensing : Advancement of ultra-sensitive MTJ-based magnetic sensors for precise biomedical applications, such as monitoring cardiac activity - RF signal processing : Exploration of multifunctional RF-MTJs for signal processing and secure communication applications, including wake-up receivers and energy harvesting SPIN-CHIP targets critical sectors, e.g. healthcare, space and edge AI, ensuring real-world applications. The project aims to prove the value of spintronics in tackling critical challenges in EU microelectronics. By integrating spintronic technology in CHIPS JU Pilot Lines, SPIN-CHIP will accelerate technology development and commercialization, and to achieve this ambition, unites key industrial players, SMEs, academic experts and RTOs.
